Sony India to bowl new sports channel for Six

Six is reportedly the name of the new sports channel from owners of Sony Television in India, Multi Screen Media (MSM), and industry speculation suggests April will see its soft launch.

To bolster its premium sporting content, the broadcaster is currently evaluating the tender issue for the global media rights to matches hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to Business Standard.

Nitesh Kriplani, has reportedly been appointed business head for the new channel, from his role as senior vice president of MSM for business development and syndication.

The sports channel, when launched, will compete in India with ESPN-Star Sports, the 50:50 joint venture between Walt Disney and News Corporation; the Zee-owned Taj TV with its Ten Sports brand; Neo Broadcast; and the state-owned Doordarshan (DD) Sports channel.

MSM already owns the broadcast rights to the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 cricket tournament, New Zealand cricket, FA Cup football, and NBA basketball. These events are currently broadcast on SET Max, which shows both sports and films.

In addition to Max, MSM runs Hindi general entertainment channel Sony TV, SAB TV, Sony Pix, AXN, Animax and the Sony Mix music channel.
