India's DTH TV subscriber base tops 54.5MN

Subscribers to India's six private direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV providers have now reached 54.52 million, according to the latest figures issued by the Telecom Regulations Authority of India (TRAI).

The figures also show the number of private satellite television channels now numbers 823 – in addition to state broadcaster Doordarshan. Of these private channels, 184 are pay-TV channels, according to the 26 broadcast distributors which provided the regulator with reports for the quarter ending last December.

The maximum number of channels – including pay-TV, free-to-air and local – carried by multi-system operators (MSOs) by the end of December is 267. The maximum number of channels from MSOs with analogue networks was 100, says the TRAI quarterly indicator report.

While telephone subscribers (both wireless and fixed line) in India declined from 937.7 million at the end of September 2012 to 895.51 million at the end of December 2012, Internet subscribers increased from 24.01 million on 30 September 2012 to 25.33 million by 31 December 2012 – registering a quarterly growth rate of 5.49%.

The amount of broadband subscribers increased to 14.98 million at the end of December, from 14.68 million at the end of September 2012. This represented a quarterly growth of 2.02% and year-on-year growth of 12.23%. The vast majority (84.82%) of India's broadband subscribers are connected via digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, according to TRAI.
