Star India plans two regional, one action film channel

Star TV India is eyeing a December launch for a new movie channel and two television channels aimed at state-wide audiences, according to the Press Trust of India.

"Star India will launch a dedicated action channel and two regional channels by the end of this year. Regional channels...that's where the next phase of growth will come from," Deepak Jacob, executive vice president and general counsel legal, Star India told reporters at the Cable & Satellite Broadcasters Association conference in Hong Kong.

Star India currently broadcasts 35 channels in seven languages across India, boasting nearly 400 million viewers each week. Its popular general entertainment channels include Star Plus, Star One and Star World, the music Channel [V], as well as film channels Star Gold and Star Movies. Its regional channels currently include Star Jalsha and Star Pravah.

The Asianet, Star Vijay, Suvarna, and ESPN-Star Sports channel are also provided via joint ventures.

High definition versions of channels including StarPlus, Star One, Star Movies and Star Gold were launched in April.
