Kannada news channel set for Indian launch this month

Public TV, a new 24-hour news channel for the Indian state of Kannada, will launch on 26 January to help bring "a measure of credibility" into the system following the corruption scandals which have rocked India.

Journalist HR Ranganath is chairman and managing editor of Writemen Media, the Bangalore-based company that will promote the station, and brings with him 24 years media experience, according to Exchange4Media.

Aurn Kumar will be its chief executive officer, and S Divaakar its vice president, sales and marketing.

"Over the last two years, corruption has come to a head. Therefore, it is now important for journalism, the last post of democracy, to take the lead in dealing with it to bring in a measure of credibility into the system," HR Ranganath is quoted as saying by Exchange4Media.

"The name of our company - Writemen Media - is an inspired project of journalistic thinking and reflects the same principles. We embarked on this project keeping the average citizen in mind, and hence, the name of the channel," he added.

Public TV, which launches on India Republic Day, will reportedly be available on both digital and analogue cable networks provided by a number of multi system operators.

It will compete with six existing Kannada news channels, namely: Udaya News, Suvarna News 24x7, TV9 Karnataka, Samaya TV, Janashri, and Kasthuri Newz 24.
