Ten Golf clinches Asian Tour TV rights deal

The yet-to-be launched Ten Golf channel is to cover the Asian Tour for six years from 2013, having supplanted ESPN Star Sports (ESS) as the event's official broadcaster in India.

The deal, which also sees an extension to Ten Golf's European Tour rights for a similar period, reportedly cost the Nimbus-owned channel US$12 million.

"We are thrilled with this new partnership. The appeal of the Asian Tour has grown tremendously in India especially with the success of Order of Merit winners Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa over the years," Eric Lynge, senior director (commercial), Asian Tour, told The Times of India.

Mark Lichtenhein, director of broadcasting, European Tour, added: "We are delighted to extend our relationship with Ten Sports and believe that there is enormous potential for golf in India particularly following its reintroduction as an Olympic sport in 2016."

India's new 24 hour golf channel has also recently secured a three-year contract with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and the US Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

It is also licensed to show 400 hours of programming from the US-based Golf Channel – including the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup - via a one year deal with NBC Universal International Television Distribution.
