This year's Indian Premier League (IPL) twenty20 cricketing extravaganza has so far attracted 13 million internet users in India in search of streamed video, scorecards and other content, according to market research company IMRB.
The figures, gathered between 1 April and 16 May 2012, show that IPL Indiatimes in partnership with YouTube garnered the bulk of the hits, with 7.5 million unique visitors. There were an additional 5.8 million unique visits to cricket.yahoo.com; 3.4 million users of cricinfo.com; 2.0 million visitors to IPL T20.com; and just over 1 million unique users of cricbuzz.com.
Live IPL streaming attracted 8.3 million unique users in India up to 16 May 2012, while 1.3 million watched match highlights or short segments of matches. A total of 3.7 million have gone online to listen to live match commentary during the period to 16 May, say IMRB.
Apalya Technologies, the official mobile streaming partner of the IPL, also said that by day nine of this season's IPL tournament, five times the number of views had been registered than during the entire IPL season in 2011. For the first nine days, about 1.4 million people watched IPL video online via their mobiles in India, compared to just 0.25 million last year.
