Pay-TV channels are to be added to Arasu Cable TV’s free to air package, which was re-launched by Tamil Nadu Government earlier this month after a faltering start back in 2008.
“Talks with almost all the broadcasters are over, and you can expect an announcement on the new channels to be added in the next day or two,” Mr M Jayaraman, managing director, Arasu Cable TV Corporation is quoted as saying in The Hindu Business Line.
“As promised, we will give 90 channels including those prominent pay channels,” he added.
Over 95% of Tamil Nadu’s cable operators have reportedly registered themselves with Arasu Cable TV – amounting to 1.45 crore connections, according to Media Mughals.
This equates to a total of over 37,000 cable operators, including both multi system operators (MSOs and local cable operators (LCOs), which will deliver Arasu Cable TV services - Mr Jayaraman claimed in Business Line.
The cable company expects to attract a 1.3 crore subscriber base, and raise revenues for the state government of INR 60 crore per month.
Arasu Cable TV was to offer its service to MSOs and LCOs for a monthly fee of INR 70. However, it remains to be seen if this will be raised with the addition of premium content.
