Former Disney India head to launch Epic TV

The first Hindi entertainment TV channel to focus on Indian history, folklore and mythology is to be launched this August, with Mahesh Samat, former managing director of Walt Disney India, at the helm.

Epic TV – which counts Anand Mahindra, chairman and managing director of Indian utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra as one of its key investors – will only be available to subscribers of direct-to-home (DTH) satellite or digital cable TV services. Initially it will have three to four hours of programming, according to The Times of India.

Ravina Kohli, former creative head of Yash Raj Television, is to lead development at Epic TV, with Aparna Pandey (previously at BIG CBS) in charge of content.

Epic has already acquired the broadcast rights for Indu Sundaresan's novel The Twentieth Wife, which follows the life of Mehrunissa, the daughter of Persian refugees who became the Mughal Emperor Jehangir's queen, Nur Jahan.
