Jai Maharashtra, a 24-hour news station focused on the youth market, has been launched in India by the Sahana Group (more usually associated with real estate).
Available via the Insat 10 satellite, the channel began test transmissions in early April. Deals have so far been reached for Jai Maharashtra to be carried on direct-to-home (DTH) platform Videocon d2h, as well as the 7 Star, Scod18, Siti Cable and GTPL cable TV networks.
"There are a lot of regional news channels, but we aim to focus on what matters to the entire state rather than only focusing on the big cities. We also intend to carry shows backed by investigative reporting that reveal the true story behind issues plaguing the state," channel editor Mandar Phanse is quoted as saying by Indian Television.
Interactive youth shows, entertainment, sports and technology programmes and debates will join the 'hard-hitting' news element of the channel, said the former news editor for IBN7 Lokmat. 11 bureaux across Maharashtra will feed the editorial content of the channel.
The Sahana Group also reportedly plans to launch a Hindi news channel by the end of the year.
